Istanbul Airport to City Center: Metro, Bus & Taxi
Once you’ve collected your luggage at Istanbul Airport, the next step is getting to your hotel. The easiest route to your hotel depends on where you’re staying, how much luggage you have and when you arrive.
From Istanbul Airport (IST), you can reach Taksim, Galata, Karaköy and Fındıklı by metro, airport bus, taxi or private transfer. Here’s how the options compare, with a shorter guide for arrivals at Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW).
Metro, Airport Bus or Taxi: Which Should You Take?
Metro: A reliable way to avoid road traffic, with connections to central areas such as Taksim and Galata. You’ll need to change lines and may have a short walk to your hotel.
Havaist airport bus: A convenient option if you’re staying near Taksim and the drop-off point is close to your hotel. You won’t need to change vehicles on the way to Taksim.
Taxi: A convenient option if you’re travelling with children, carrying several bags or arriving late at night. You can take a taxi from the official taxi rank outside the airport, although journey times depend on traffic.
Private airport transfer: All four Union Hotel Concept properties can help arrange airport transfer from IST or SAW. To organise your pickup, contact our team about an airport transfer before travelling and share your flight details. We’ll confirm the meeting instructions.
How to Get from Istanbul Airport (IST) to the City Center
Istanbul Airport Metro: M11 to Gayrettepe and M2
Follow the signs for the metro at Istanbul Airport and take the M11 towards Gayrettepe. At Gayrettepe, transfer to the M2 towards Yenikapı. Allow extra time for the walk between lines.
- Taksim: Get off here for Taksim Square, İstiklal Avenue and nearby hotels.
- Şişhane: Use this stop for Galata and the upper entrance to the historic Tünel funicular.
For Karaköy, leave the M2 at Şişhane and take the F2 Tünel funicular downhill towards Karaköy. From the lower Tünel station, check how far you’ll need to walk to your hotel.
For Fındıklı, take the M2 to Taksim, the F1 funicular to Kabataş and the T1 tram towards Bağcılar for one stop to Fındıklı–Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi. Depending on your hotel’s location and how much luggage you’re carrying, you may prefer to walk from Kabataş.
Havaist Airport Bus to Taksim
Havaist operates coaches from Istanbul Airport to several destinations, including Taksim. Before boarding, check the Taksim drop-off point and how far it is from your hotel. Check the official Havaist website for current boarding points, routes and departure times. Road traffic can significantly affect the journey, and some streets around Beyoğlu and Galata are steep when you’re carrying luggage.
Taxi or Private Transfer from Istanbul Airport
A door-to-door option with pickup arranged before your arrival. All four Union Hotel Concept properties can help arrange transfers from IST or SAW. Taxis can be arranged on arrival; a private transfer lets you confirm pickup details beforehand. If you’re staying with Union Hotel Concept, contact our team to discuss an airport pickup.
Arriving at Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) Instead?
SAW is on Istanbul’s Asian side. For public transport to the European side, take the M4 metro to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, then change to Marmaray.
- Karaköy: Take Marmaray to Sirkeci, walk to the T1 tram stop and ride towards Kabataş to Karaköy.
- Taksim: Continue on Marmaray to Yenikapı, then take the M2 towards Hacıosman to Taksim.
- Galata: Follow the same route to Yenikapı, then get off the M2 at Şişhane.
- Fındıklı: Take Marmaray to Sirkeci and the T1 tram towards Kabataş to Fındıklı–Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi.
Havabüs coaches also serve Taksim. You can also take a ferry from Kadıköy to the European side, depending on the timetable, although this may be less convenient with heavy luggage. Check timetables for late arrivals; a taxi or arranged transfer may be easier after rail services finish.
How Long Does It Take to Get from Istanbul Airport to the City Center?
Allow roughly 60–90 minutes from IST to central areas such as Taksim or Galata, depending on your route and traffic. From SAW, reaching the European side can take approximately 75–120 minutes or longer. Allow extra time for passport control, baggage collection and getting from your final stop to the hotel. Metro journeys avoid road congestion but involve station walks and changes. Add time for passport control, baggage collection and the journey from your final stop to your hotel.
Boutique Hotels in Central Istanbul: Where to Stay
Each Union Hotel Concept property is in a different part of central Istanbul, so the most convenient airport route depends on where you’re staying.
- Union Hotel Plat Inn: Near Taksim and İstiklal Avenue; use the M2 to Taksim or a Havaist coach serving the area.
- Doruk Palas Hotel: Around Galata and Şişhane; use the M2 to Şişhane, then From the lower Tünel station, check the walking distance to your hotel.
- Union Hotel Karaköy: Near the Golden Horn; reach Karaköy using the F2 Tünel connection from Şişhane.
- Union Hotel Port: In Fındıklı near the Bosphorus; connect via Taksim, Kabataş and the T1 tram.
Before setting off, check the route to your hotel’s actual address rather than just the nearest landmark.
Can You Check In Early or Late at an Istanbul Hotel?
Check-in at all four Union Hotel Concept properties begins at 2:00 PM. If your flight lands at 2:00 AM on Tuesday, a reservation starting that same day won’t give you access to your room straight away. Check-in begins at 2:00 PM.
For a late arrival, tell the hotel your expected arrival time. A flight landing at 2:00 AM on Tuesday does not mean a reservation starting Tuesday gives immediate room access: standard check-in is that afternoon. If you want to go straight to your room, ask about reserving the previous night.
FAQs:
1. Which Istanbul Airport Is Closer to the City Center: IST or SAW?
Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, while Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is on the Asian side. If you’re staying in Taksim, Galata, Karaköy or Fındıklı, IST generally offers a more straightforward public transport connection. SAW is also accessible, but reaching these neighbourhoods usually involves crossing to the European side. The best choice depends on your hotel location, flight schedule and preferred transport.
2. Can I Use an Istanbulkart to Travel from the Airport to the City Center?
Yes. Istanbulkart can be used on Istanbul’s metro network, including the M11 from Istanbul Airport and the M4 from Sabiha Gökçen, as well as connecting metro, tram and many ferry services. Airport coaches such as Havaist and Havabüs have separate payment arrangements, so check the operator’s accepted methods before boarding.
3. How do I get from Istanbul Airport to the city center late at night?
Metro services don’t run throughout the night, so check the operating hours before travelling. Depending on when you land, an airport coach, official taxi or pre-booked transfer may be a better option. Check the latest departure times before choosing your route.
4. Is there a direct metro from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
No. The M11 connects to the M2 at Gayrettepe; the M2 then serves Taksim.
